Updated - Adds video - Three people suffered spinal injuries while jumping off the rocks in Cominotto over the weekend, the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps reported.

Two of the incidents took place on Friday afternoon and another yesterday.

The first involved a woman who suffered back pain after jumping from a rock near Cominotto, known as ‘il-gwardja’.  The second involved a man who jumped off Cominotto. In both cases, ERRC lifeguards assisted the swimmers and took them to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo for onward transport to Gozo hospital.

The incident yesterday involved a 23-year-old Maltese man, who is also receiving hospital treatment.

In June, Malta Tourism Authority chairman Gavin Gulia said Cominotto would this summer be out of bounds to daredevils who use it as a dangerous springboard,.

Every summer Cominotto lures many youngsters to its cliffs from where they hurl themselves into the sea – some 10 people, mostly foreigners, were injured last summer alone.

The ERRC said its rescue boat Lifesaver 2 yesterday afternoon also towed in a paddle boat which was unable to return to shore because of strong currents off Ramla Bay, Gozo.
