A crisis centre set up by the Foreign Affairs Ministry is currently monitoring the movements of some 100 Maltese citizens still in Libya, a spokesperson told Times of Malta this morning.

Opening the crisis centre to the media, the spokesperson said that more than a thousand telephone contacts are being conducted on a daily basis by the eight officers manning the crisis centre.

She said that all those Maltese who would like to return to Malta were being given the necessary information about possible flights in their vicinity.

Apart from phone contacts, the officers are using other means of communication and are monitoring the international media in order to be able to react to any developments.

According to an interactive map on the whereabouts of the Maltese still in Libya, it looks that the majority are in oil fields in the centre and east of the country.
