The Arab and Muslim community in Malta today called for the release of Martin Galea, a Maltese oil worker who was abducted in Libya last week.

In a statement signed by Imam Mohammed El Sadi, the community said:

“We consider this act as irresponsible and unjustified. We call upon those who are responsible for the abduction of Mr Galea to release him immediately to be able to return to his family safe and sound.”

The community expressed sympathy and solidarity with the Maltese government and people and Mr Galea’s family.

“The Maltese and the Libyan people have been enjoying excellent relations for decades and always help each other in difficult times.

“With gratitude we remember Malta’s help to the Libyan people during several crises. We are certain that this unfortunate isolated incident does not reflect the true cordial attitude of the Libyan people towards their Maltese brothers and will not affect the good historical relations between the two neighbour people.

“We pray to Allah to protect Mr Galea and help him join his family soon.”
