The government will no longer be in control of electricity generation as a result of a Bill approved by Parliament on Friday which triggered the start of the Enemalta’s “privatisation”, the Nationalist Party said yesterday.
The Opposition voted against the Bill, pointing out that its decision was taken in the national interest.
“We could never support a bill which smacked of betrayal and left Enemalta employees in the dark on their future,” the PN said in a statement.
It also lashed out at the government for not disclosing the agreement signed with Electrogas for the building of the new gas-fired power plant, and the memorandum of understanding signed with Shangai Electric, which is set to acquire a minority stake in Enemalta.
This was only the third time in this legislature that the Opposition had voted against a Bill, while at the same time it tabled 16 Private Members’ Bills or motions, the PN said.
