The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) is participating as a partner in the Electric City Transport (Electra) project which aims to promote the use of electric scooters in urban areas by involving residents and tourists in their daily commuting needs.

The agency aims to use and increase the awareness of electric mobility among public bodies, private organisations and local stakeholders while favouring sustainable development within the transport sector.

The project involves 11 partners representing eight countries in the EU. It includes a pilot experimentation in Genoa, Florence and Barcelona where the use of scooters is very common, while the rest of the cities will undertake all preparatory activities to host such a system in the future.

The pilot actions will transfer good practices to at least five other cities in order to involve a large number of people.

The first project meeting was held in Malta on March 6 and 7.

The main aim of the project is to enable the reduction of pollution due to passenger transport by motivating the use of a new urban sustainable mobility model.

It is also aiming to increase the use of electric scooters in urban areas through short sharing while contributing to the 2020 goals.

The project will last for 30 months and will kick off in the third quarter of this year.

It is foreseen that feedback will form an important part of this project as it will come up with indicators that will examine the project’s effectiveness.

The project will test its own innovative model to give useful solutions related to the accessibility of this kind of transport to citizens.
