Motorists are expected to face another weekend of traffic delays after three major bypasses are set to be temporarily closed to let off fireworks.

The Marsa/Ħamrun bypass, the Mrieħel bypass and a part of Aldo Moro Road will be closed to traffic today between 9pm and 11pm and tomorrow between 6pm and 9pm.

The diversions will take place due to the celebrations marking the village feast of Santa Venera.

A typo on Facebook whipped up even bigger uproar yesterday after the police said on the social networking site that three major bypasses will be closed today from 9am to 11pm.

The error was rectified, with the time amended to 9pm instead of 9am, to the relief of many.

According to the police and Transport Malta, the stretch of road leading to Regional Road from Triq il-Kappillan Mifsud, Ħamrun, will be closed to traffic.

Northbound traffic on Regional Road will be diverted to Triq il-Ferrovija, Birkirkara, or Triq il-Kappillan Mifsud, Ħamrun.

Northbound traffic exiting Triq Dun Karm (known as the Birkirkara bypass) will be diverted to Msida.

The exit to Regional Road from the Msida skate park roundabout will be closed to traffic.

The hill leading to the Marsa/Ħamrun Bypass from Aldo Moro Road, Marsa, will be closed to traffic.

The Marsa/Ħamrun bypass, Qormi, will be closed to traffic as will the Mrieħel bypass.

Traffic exiting Triq in-Negozju and Triq il-Kaċċaturi, Qormi, towards the Marsa/Ħamrun bypass will be diverted.

Last year, the Santa Venera tunnels were also closed for a couple of hours in the evening after the police granted permission to let off fireworks from a field next to this busy arterial road.

The last time permission was granted prior to last year was in 2007.

With the opening of Mater Dei Hospital in 2008, the authorities had stopped granting permission amid concerns that closing this arterial road would hinder ambulances and jeopardise patients.

Last weekend, thousands of motorists faced frustrating delays as traffic was diverted because of the Msida feast and fireworks.
