MEP Miriam Dalli is calling on the EU to take immediate action following the recent tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea and the unprecedented increase of irregular immigrants in the south.

She was speaking during a meeting held by the European Parliament’s immigration committee (Libe) and the director general for home affairs, Matthias Ruete.

The committee discussed the European Commission’s documents about the Mediterranean Task Force.

While such pilot projects were a positive initiative and would help the EU assess the situation, they had to be followed by concrete initiatives, Dr Dalli said.

She called on the Commission to plan follow-ups for such projects because no time could be wasted when it came to migration.
