Badminton: Shuttler Parupalli Kashyap has his sights set on one of Glasgow’s many karaoke bars should he win gold for India at the Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old, who competes in the men’s singles and mixed team badminton events, says he plans to celebrate by crooning if he can hit the right notes on the court. “If I win gold I will be in the mood to sing. Whenever I get a chance, I like to sing. I love singing,” the second seed explained. “I like all the Bollywood music but I enjoy a lot of English music too. There is no particular first choice. If I can I will look for a karaoke bar in Glasgow after the Games.”

Cricket: Cricket’s absence from Commonwealths will continue at least until the 2018 Games in Australia after the ICC turned down an invitation from the governing body of the multi-sport event. South Africa won the gold medal when cricket, in its 50-over format, made its only appearance at the quadrennial event featuring mostly former British colonies during the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games. Prince Tunku Imran of Malaysia, the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation, had formally approached the ICC in 2012 to consider participating in the 2014 Glasgow Games and also the next one.

Motor racing: The Russian-licensed Marussia Formula One team appointed American driver Alexander Rossi yesterday as their official reserve for the rest of the season. Marussia said in a statement at the Hungarian Grand Prix that the 22-year-old, who was previously reserve at rivals Caterham, had joined with immediate effect. Although Marussia remain Russian registered, the cash-strapped team are based in Britain and independent from Russian sportscar maker Marussia Motors that had invested in it but closed its doors in April. Their race drivers are Frenchman Jules Bianchi and Britain’s Max Chilton. Marussia started the season with the smallest budget in the sport but are currently ninth after Bianchi scored two points in Monaco. Caterham are 11th and last.
