Capt Hedley Kett, who during World War II served on a British submarine ferrying aviation fuel, ammunition and food from Gibraltar to Malta, has died aged 100.
Nicknamed Tanker, Capt Kett made five cargo runs to Malta on the submarine Clyde. Aviation fuel used to be carried in the submarine’s tanks but The Telegraph reported in an obituary on Capt. Hedley that a lot more cargo used to be ferried to the island.
The British newspaper recounts that, once, Capt. Kett, then a first lieutenant, was asked to deliver a crate of lipsticks to Malta but he refused. However, he soon accepted when an officer explained that the cosmetic would boost morale on the besieged island.
