The police still did not know the motive behind a shooting in Msida last April, Police Inspector Keith Arnaud told the court today.

Insp Arnaud was testifying in the compilation of evidence against Jonathan Pace, 31, from Gudja who is charged with the attempted murder of Vincent Muscat, known as il-Kohhu.

Mr Muscat was shot in the head while in his car outside his Msida home in Bordin Street on April 8 at 11.30pm. He was hit three times.

Insp Arnaud said the victim was initially reluctant to name the shooter but he later did.

He said that CCTV footage of the incident showed a Peugeot 207 Skyline model with a number of identifying features. The police called all 100 owners of such cars and on the second day of investigations, they identified who the car in the shooting belonged to.

Insp. Arnaud said the car was a rented vehicle and when they spoke to the owner of the rental company he provided them with the rental documents which showed it had been rented to a John Pace. A fake contact number and address were given.

The accused had told the owner of the rental company that he could be reached on a different number and gave him his own mobile number, Inps Arnaud said.

He said the police had evidence to say that the accused was in possession of that vehicle before and after the shooting.

The car, Insp Arnaud said, was burned down the day after the shooting.

The case continues.
