A “nice guy” with a severe alcohol problem has been remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring his girlfriend and slightly injuring her on at least two occasions.

Renald Hayman, 32, of Senglea, was charged and sentenced over a similar incident involving another woman in November 2012.

Lawyer Franco Debono, who represented the victim, said the accused had terrorised the woman’s family who now lived in fear of him.

He said he beat up his girlfriend when he got drunk and a number of police reports had been filed.

Defence lawyer Lucio Sciriha said his client was not a bad man but had a very severe alcohol problem. He needed urgent help because he turned violent when drunk.
