The three-month old girl who was hospitalised last week after her father allegedly shook her while she was having a fit had a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage, a court heard today.

Doctors who examined the baby girl told Magistrate Neville Camilleri this morning that the fracture to her skull and the eventual bleeding inside and outside the brain was what had caused the girl to fit.

They also said that the girl had several bruises to her tummy, back and forehead and also blood at the back of her eyes, which was one of the symptoms of a shaken baby.

The doctors were testifying against the father who stands charged with seriously injuring his daughter on July 17.  The 26-year-old from Nadur is pleading not guilty to the charges. He is insisting he loves his child and takes good care of her.

The child was rushed to hospital last Wednesday and was initially in critical condition. Her condition was so bad that she was flown to Mater Dei Hospital in Malta by helicopter to receive further care.

Lawyer Lucio Sciriha appeared for the accused.
