It was during a seminar, which was organised by the Cleaner Technology Centre, that the guest speaker from the UK mentioned fireworks displays as potential sources of pollution while discussing air pollution.

This was about 10 years ago and I do remember that the statement did not go down well with some of the participants. Unfortunately, we did not follow it up.

It was, therefore, heartening now reading Alfred Vella’s comments and the data gathered on the subject by his team confirming the adverse effect on public health and the environment.

Hopefully, this will lead to more awareness of the polluting potential and the possibility of identifying less toxic alternative chemicals that can be used in the manufacture of fireworks.
