A man recently released from prison after serving 11 years pleaded not guilty to possession of cocaine and cannabis on Sunday.

Akram Swayah, 37, a Libyan living in St Paul’s Bay, served time for a case dating back 20 years ago, his lawyer Alessandro Lia said in requesting bail.

Mr Swayah had a partner and eight-month-old baby and had been trying to find a job, he said.

Prosecuting Inspector Herman Mula objected saying that, even though the amount found was very small, he was a relapser. However, he admitted Mr Swayah had collaborated in the investigation.

Magistrate Carol Peralta granted him bail against a €250 deposit and a €4,000 personal guarantee.
