The cost of living went down last month according to the latest figures published by the National Statistics Office.

On the back of lower electricity rates, the average annual inflation rate in June stood at -0.1 per cent. A year earlier inflation stood at 1.58 per cent.

According to the NSO, the largest downward impacts on annual inflation were brought by the water, energy and gas index due to lower tariffs announced by the government in March.

Air fares and vegetables were also cheaper when compared to the same month in 2013.

On the other hand, some prices have registered increases. The main ones include beverages and tobacco, household equipment and house maintenance costs.

A survey conducted recently by Eurostat showed that Malta had the highest prices for household equipment and white goods among the 28 EU member states.
