The leader of the Opposition has, once again, resorted to bombastic statements to try and make people take notice. This time by accusing the government of undermining democracy simply because the government may be postponing local council elections so that all local council elections will be held at the same time together with the MEP election, thus saving millions of euros of taxpayers’ money – something which the vast majority of the Maltese people agree with.

When I read Simon Busuttil’s statement on this issue, I couldn’t fail to remember that he has been, since his student days, a fanatic supporter of perhaps the most anti-democratic institution in Europe – the EEC, then EC and lastly the EU – which was created by politicians who never bothered to ask for their countries’ citizens to have a say on the matter.

And yet, just postponing local elections for a few years to save Maltese and Gozitan voters millions of euros which they pay in taxes, plus saving them from more electoral fatigue, is, to the leader of the Opposition, unacceptable as it undermines democracy in our country. That same ‘democracy’ which never crossed his mind when he was a top official of The European Movement, the propaganda arm of the EEC/EC/EU, or as long as the EU is concerned.
