Sahar: Newly-promoted Dutch club Willem II Tilburg have signed Israeli international forward Ben Sahar on a one-year contract with an option for a second year. The 24-year-old, who was last on loan at Arminia Bielefeld from Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, has played for 11 clubs including Chelsea, QPR, Portsmouth, Espanyol and Auxerre.

Aspas: Sevilla yesterday completed the signing of Liverpool forward Iago Aspas on a season-long loan. The Spanish striker passed a medical on Friday after the two clubs agreed a deal, which includes the option to buy permanently, and the paperwork has now been finalised.

Taddei: Veteran midfielder Rodrigo Taddei has parted with Roma after a nine-year stay at the capital club. Yesterday, it was confirmed that Taddei, 34, had joined Perugia in Serie B on a free transfer after reports had linked him with a move to Fiorentina.

Statue: West Brom are to unveil a statue of club legend Tony Brown outside The Hawthorns before the start of the upcoming season. Brown, nicknamed ‘Bomber’, joined the club as a schoolboy and played for them between 1961 and 1981. His 279 goals and 720 appearances are both club records. He was also won the 1966 League Cup and the 1968 FA Cup.

Albertini: Former Italy and Milan midfielder Demetrio Albertini is expected to run for the position of national football federation president in the August 11 election. Former president Giancarlo Abete quit following Italy’s poor show in the World Cup finals. Albertini, 42, had recently announced he was resigning from his post as federation vice-president. The favourite for the post is Carlo Tavecchio, head of the National Amateur League.

Detained: Police have detained six Vietnamese soccer players on suspicion of throwing a domestic league game at the weekend, the latest arrests in a country notorious for match-rigging and illicit sports gambling. The six Dong Nai players were questioned by police investigators immediately after their 5-3 defeat by Quang Ninh in a top-flight V.League match. Match-fixing has long plagued Vietnamese soccer, with arrests of coaches, bookmakers and players commonplace.
