The two major political parties have paid tribute to Mr Justice Gino Camilleri, who died yesterday aged 64 following a long illness.

Though his condition had severely impaired his mobility, Mr Justice Camilleri insisted on carrying out his duties to the very end.

The Justice Ministry described him as a distinguished member of the judiciary who fulfilled his duties with great dedication.

Throughout his 41-year career, as lawyer, magistrate and judge, Mr Justice Camilleri had always expressed a sense of justice and humanity in the interests of society and with loyalty to the Constitution, the government said.

The PN described his conduct as exemplary, setting the standards for members of the judiciary.

Former PN justice minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici heaped praise on him for the great determination and resilience he showed in the final months of his career.

Both the government and the PN expressed their condolences to his family.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2pm at the Jesuits Church in Valletta.

Born in Valletta on June 6, 1950, Giacinto (know as Gino) Camilleri graduated Doctor of Laws in 1973. After setting up a law firm together with Philip Galea, in 1976 he became a partner in the law firm Farrugia, Gatt and Falzon.

In 1983 he was appointed magistrate and 12 years later a judge in the Superior Courts, sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court till his death.

Apart from serving as president of the Maltese Olympic Committee, Mr Justice Camilleri was also president and founder of Exiles Sports Club as well as head of the Amateur Swimming Association and the Squash Association.

In 2003 he became a member of the European Forum of Judges for the Environment.

He was married to Patricia, née Boland, and had two sons, Michael and Adrian, who are both lawyers.
