Several activities have been held to mark the 50th anniversary of the setting up of the Russian Grand Priory of Malta of the Order of St John.

A thanksgiving Mass was attended by a large number of knights, dames, guests and members of other chivalric orders.

Following the Mass, Grand Prior Paul Borg spoke about the order’s achievements over the past 50 years and Lieutenant Grand Master Bailiff Michel Bohé handed an appreciation certificate to Comm. George Vella, a member of the first council in 1964 as well as of the present council. Bohé later unveiled a commemorative plaque that was blessed by Fr Victor Enriquez. A reception followed.

Maltapost issued five personal stamps and a commemorative hand-stamp cancellation and the priory issued a first-day cover and five commemorative cards.

The council members later hosted a lunch for refugees, who were mostly Coptic Catholics and Orthodox being cared for by the Emigrants Commission.

The order is headquartered in St Paul Street, Valletta.
