Mr Justice Gino Camilleri passed away today, aged 64.

The son of the late Lewis Camilleri and of the late Teodora nèe Bruno, Mr Justice Camilleri was born in Valletta. He graduated Doctor of Laws in November 1973.

He was appointed Magistrate in 1983 and sat in the Court of Magistrates in both Malta and Gozo, dealing with criminal and civil cases.

He also presided over the Rent Regulation Board, the Land Arbitration Board and the Rural Leases Control Board.

In 1995, he was appointed Judge of the Superior Courts and has since been ordinarily sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court.

He has also dealt with criminal cases in the Criminal Court and in the Court of Criminal Appeal and is currently the Judge ordinarily sitting in the Voluntary Jurisdiction Section of the Civil Court.

In 2003 Judge Camilleri became a member of the European Forum of Judges for the Environment.

In a statement, the government said Mr Justice Camilleri was a judge who continued to do his duties with a sense of duty and dedication in spite of his health problems.

In a 41-year career, he showed a sense of justice, humanity and public service in the interest of society and with loyalty to the constitution.

The government expressed condolences with his family.

Former Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici also paid tribute to Mr Justice Camilleri. Dr Mifsud Bonnici expressed his admiration for the determination shown by the late Judge who kept doin his duties till the end in spite of his mobility problems.

The Nationalist Party and the Malta Olympic Committee, of which he was a former president, also expressed condolences.

The funeral is on Wednesday.
