I am shocked by the government’s decision to consider, once again, a bridge between Malta and Gozo, which is to be entrusted to the Chinese.

The environmental consequences of such a bridge are certainly something to worry about.

Should the government insist on a permanent link to Gozo the only environment-friendly solution would be an undersea tunnel link, which is technically possible. Such a tunnel exists between France and the UK, so surely a much shorter one can be built linking Malta and Gozo.

However, the government should first take into consideration the environmental consequences of any permanent link to Gozo.

Whatever type of link between the two islands the government goes for is bound to dramatically increase the traffic on Gozo’s roads.

Can you imagine how many noisy motorcycles would cross over from Malta to Gozo?

These machines give rise to the horrible, ear-splitting revving of engines that not only attract attention but will surely contribute to destroying the peace and quiet that is Gozo’s unique charm.

Gozo is well and adequately served by the excellent and frequent ferry link between Mġarr and Ċirkewwa. This ferry trip provides tourists and locals the chance to see and admire the magnificent scenery on the way, including the cave-riddled sea borders of Comino.

It is the responsibility of the Gozitans to stand up and resist the building of a permanent link between the two islands as this would have irreversible negative consequences for Gozo.

Gozo is a fragile and most beautiful island that needs constant attention and care.

Whoever loves Gozo should appeal for the island to be left alone and untouched.
