Italian league chief Maurizio Beretta told reporters yesterday that referees during Serie A and Serie B matches next season will be using vanishing spray.

“It was ratified, so we will begin adopting this new technology,” Beretta revealed.

“It’s obvious these cans can’t be carried by referees like hand luggage but these are problems that can be easily dealt with.”

At the World Cup in Brazil this month, referees carried the spray in a holster around their waists, using it to ensure players respected the correct distance on free-kicks.

Clubs keen on Australia’s Cahill

Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill is in line for a surprise move back to the Premier League.

Reports in the UK said yesterday that there has been significant interest from both QPR and Sunderland, as well as number of other top-flight clubs in the Premier League and also across Europe.

Cahill enjoyed a good World Cup for his country, becoming the first Australian ever to score in three successive tournaments.

The 34-year-old left England in 2012 for New York Red Bulls.

Palermo land Sweden’s Quaison

Palermo have signed talented Swedish international midfielder Robin Quaison from AIK.

The 20-year-old, who had been linked with several clubs in England’s Premier League after he scored a stunning goal in a friendly against Manchester United in August 2013, has signed a three-year deal, Palermo said.

Quaison made his debut for Sweden against North Korea in January 2013 and has scored twice in four internationals.

He broke into the AIK side in April 2012, netting seven goals in 53 competitive games for the Solna side.

Relegated from Serie A after a turbulent season in 2012/13, Palermo bounced back at the first attempt.

Torino swoop for goalkeeper Avramov

Torino have signed Serbian goalkeeper Vlada Avramov following his release from Cagliari.

The 35-year-old was a free agent after leaving the Sardinian club, where he had been the first-choice keeper for three seasons, in June.

A statement published on Torino’s official website yesterday welcomed Avramov to the Stadio Olimpico without disclosing the length of his contract at the club.

The former Pescara and Fiorentina keeper follows Fabio Quagliarella to Torino.

Quagliarella, a 25-time Italy international striker, joined Giampiero Ventura’s side from Juventus for 3.5 million euros on Friday.

Lampard to make New York move

Frank Lampard looks set to complete his move to New York City FC this week. He has been without a club since he left Chelsea at the start of June.

The 36-year-old midfielder received a host of proposals from across the world, but reports said Lampard has decided to accept an offer from the new MLS franchise, which is part-owned by Manchester City chief Sheikh Mansour.

It is understood Lampard was highly impressed with the club’s vision and he is expected to sign a contract with the franchise this week.

The New York club was formed in May 2013, but will not start competing in the American league until March 2015.

As a result, Lampard could spend some time with New York’s sister club Melbourne City FC over the next few months.

Napoli close in on Kramer signing

Napoli are reportedly on the verge of signing Germany international Christoph Kramer from Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Tuttosport yesterday, Napoli have met Bayer Leverkusen’s asking price for their midfielder and the Serie A club are now ready to fork out €12 million to get their player who is currently midway through a two-year loan at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Napoli’s interest has been going for several weeks now and negotiations intensified last week when Kramer returned home from Germany’s successful World Cup campaign.

West Brom splash the dosh on Ideye

West Brom have signed Nigeria forward Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club-record transfer fee on a three-year deal.

The fee was undisclosed but the club said that it exceeds the amount they paid Sunderland for Stephane Sessegnon last September.

“Brown Ideye is a quality striker and I’m looking forward to working with him,” head coach Alan Irvine said.

“He’s a strong, quick, powerful player who likes to get in behind defences and has plenty of Champions League and international experience.”

The 25-year-old forward arrives at The Hawthorns with an impressive record having scored 74 goals in 182 career league appearances.
