A loggerhead turtle.A loggerhead turtle.

Training sessions are being held for the volunteers in the LifePlus project Migrate which aims to protect and conserve the bottlenose dolphin and the loggerhead turtle.

Participants will learn how to recognise the different species of cetaceans and turtles they may encounter and what kind of data to gather for the project. The programme will also increase their awareness of the importance of these flagship species of the Mediterranean Sea.

By gathering various data such as population levels, it will be possible to further conserve such species through targeted efforts. Another aim of the project is to identify feeding areas or important migratory routes which, if identified around the Maltese islands, will be protected.

Anyone out at sea with a good eye and enthusiasm to contribute to this data gathering can play an important role in this initiative by sending an e-mail to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority with information about the sightings of these marine species.

The project has been ongoing since 2012 and is coordinated by Mepa in partnership with KAI Marine Services of Spain, with the collaboration of Bank of Valletta.

The training sessions are being held at BOV’s head office.

Anyone interested in attending information sessions or wishing to be part of this research project by participating in the volunteers’ activity may send an e-mail to life.migrate@mepa.org.mt.
