Ninety-seven students from 20 schools received awards for their contributions in two education for sustainable development programmes run by Nature Trust Malta – Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) and Learning about Forests (Leaf).

The event was held at the John F. Kennedy memorial and attended by US Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley and Environment Minister Leo Brincat.

In the international YRE programme, Malta competed with over 15 countries and won six awards, three of which were first place, two second and one third. The winners received cameras, smartphones and cash gifts as prizes, and will be participating in an international workshop in Cyprus in September.

The Leaf programme is growing steadily, with 34 schools registered in just three years. Seven of these schools have been awarded with the Leaf plaque for their work related to conservation of native forests, instilling love for trees in school communities, making responsible choices to reduce the negative impacts on world forests and planting more indigenous trees.
