Two men were yesterday charged with stealing an old Bedford truck which they allegedly sold to a scrap metal yard where it was broken up.

James Azzopardi, 25, from Qormi, and Jürgen Gatt, 22, of Żebbuġ, pleaded not guilty to stealing the truck on April 23 and handling stolen property. Mr Azzopardi denied driving without a licence and Mr Gatt denied relapsing.

The seven-ton truck was taken from a garage in Birkirkara. The scrap dealer paid the two men some €1,000 for it based on its weight, the court heard.

Police found the truck cut into pieces and formed into cubes using a machine.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman granted the men bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000 and a deposit of €2,000.
