Celtic will face either Legia Warsaw or St Patrick’s in the Champions League third qualifying round if they come through their second-round tie against KR Reykjavik.

The Scottish title-winners on Tuesday secured a 1-0 first-leg victory over their Icelandic opponents away from home in what was new Hoops boss Ronny Deila’s first game in charge.

The second leg is next Tuesday, 24 hours before League of Ireland Premier Division champions St Patrick’s host Polish side Legia Warsaw in the return leg of their tie, the opening encounter of which finished in a 1-1 draw.

The reward for Malta champions Valletta FC – if they can bounce back from a 0-1 first-leg upset at home to Azerbaijan’s FK Qarabag and win the tie – will be a clash against FC Salzburg.

The crack Austria side enter the competition at the third qualifying round, having won the Austrian Bundesliga in style last season, way in front of second-placed Rapid Vienna.

Salzburg won the league title with 80 points and weeks to spare as Rapid could only manage 62 points at the end of the season.

Other notable ties in the third qualifying round see Feyenoord take on Besiktas, Grasshoppers play Lille and Standard Liege face Panathinaikos.

Before the draw was made UEFA’s Emergency Panel decided Russian and Ukrainian clubs cannot be pitted against each other in the upcoming seasony.

The decision was taken after months of tension between the two countries following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and civil unrest in the Russian-speaking east of Ukraine.

UEFA said in a statement: “After evaluating a request and taking into account the safety and security situation in the region, the UEFA Emergency Panel has decided that Ukrainian and Russian teams cannot be drawn against each other until further notice.”

As a result, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk were prevented from being pitted together in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, yesterday.
