Last season, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez finished as the Premier League’s leading marksman with a total of 31 goals.

It seemed that the Uruguayan reserved his best for matches against Norwich who were relegated to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Suarez, who will play for Barcelona next season, had a remarkable scoring record against the Canaries as the 26-year-old became the first Premier League player to score three hat-tricks against the same team − the last in the 5-1 victory over Norwich at Anfield.

Suarez, 27, will not be able to play for his new team until the end of October. He was expelled from the World Cup in Brazil last month and given a nine-match competitive international ban as well as a four-month suspension from any football-related activities for biting Giorgio Chiellini.

After initially denying that he bit the Italy defender, Suarez later issued a carefully-worded statement admitting his offence, the third time he has bitten an opponent during a match, and vowed there would be no repeat.

Other events worthy of note from season 2013-14:

• After their 15th outing, Chelsea had already conceded more goals than they did in the whole of Jose Mourinho’s debut season as Blues manager in 2004-05.

• The 5-0 win over Tottenham represents Liverpool’s biggest ever victory at White Hart Lane and Spurs’ heaviest home defeat in 16 years.

• Manchester United lose a third game in a row for the first time since 2001 as Sunderland take a one-goal lead into the League Cup semi-final, second leg.

• Petr Cech keeps his 209th clean sheet for Chelsea in the 2-0 win at Hull, bettering the mark set by legendary goalkeeper Peter Bonetti.

• With a 14th-minute goal against Cardiff City, Manchester City become the fastest team to ever reach 100 goals − in all competitions − in Premier League history.

• Chelsea manager Mourinho celebrates his 100th win and 329 points in just 142 Premier League games with a 3-1 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

• In the January window, Manchester United confirm Juan Mata’s transfer from Chelsea for a record fee of £37 million.

• The emphatic 4-0 home victory over Everton is Liverpool’s biggest derby triumph since November 1982. Liverpool are now unbeaten in the last 14 Premier League Merseyside derbies at Anfield.

• Liverpool thrash Arsenal 5-1, mirroring the result when the pair clashed on January 1, 1910. Liverpool beat Woolwich Arsenal (the name Arsenal used until 1914) 5-1 under Tom Watson – the man who led Liverpool to their first ever First Division title in 1900-01.

• When Daniel Sturridge latched onto a pass from Steven Gerrard at Craven Cottage to score for Liverpool in the 3-2 win against Fulham, the Reds broke a record which stretched back to 1905-06. Sturridge’s calm finish meant Brendan Rodgers’s men scored in the first half for the 16th consecutive game in the league.

• In the 3-0 victory over West Brom, Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck becomes the first player in Premier League history to record double figures for both goals and assists in five different seasons.

Award shared

• The Player of the Month award for March is shared by Liverpool duo Gerrard and Suarez. It is the sixth time the prize had joint winners.

The five previous occasions were:

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton (Blackburn Rovers) − November 1994.

Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore (Liverpool) − January 1996.

Kevin Davies (Southampton) and Andy Cole (Manchester United) − November 1997.

Dennis Bergkamp and Edu (Arsenal) − February 2004

Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane (Tottenham Hotspur) − April 2007.

• David Moyes, who was given a six-year contract when he replaced Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, is sacked after nine months and 49 games in charge. No United manager had vacated his post so quickly in 82 years. Moyes’s reign was the shortest since Walter Crickmer’s 43-game spell in 1931-32.
