An aquaculture strategy for the Maltese islands was launched this morning by Fisheries Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes.

The strategy “Towards Sustainability 2014-2025” aims for sustainable growth of the industry.

It will be funded by the European Commission’s European Fisheries Fund.

Mr Galdes said that Malta was among the first European countries to establish such a plan, one of the main aims of which was the establishment of aquaculture zones.

Another aim is for monitoring to move from the planning authority to the Fisheries Department.

Mr Galdes noted that San Lucjan had become too small for the growth envisaged and the strategy proposed a marine hatchery with the aim of eventually moving away from the centre.
