Being a 1980s child is not without its pitfalls. The gold and multi-coloured demons of my childhood put up quite a brutal fight against the blacker, austere shadows that my adolescence eventually gave way to. I can still remember my relief in the late 1990s when the plain white T-shirt started being stamped with provocative slogans; after all, if a picture can tell a thousand words, then why shouldn’t your T-shirt be able to scream them?

Indeed, shouting from the rooftops is very much the speciality of the new brand gripping our shores and spreading faster than the Black Plague: Recured.

Starting quietly over two years ago, this homegrown brand conceived by Robert Ebejer has been slowly gaining momentum and popularity among the street-wise young, and was finally launched online on July 3. Unlike many other local brands, the focus of Recured clothing is contemporary, urban street wear which one can slip into on a daily basis and dress down or up accordingly.

With the catchy brand name coming from Google’s random word generator, Ebejer says the choice of prints is anything, but the team pride themselves on “not simply giving the consumer a garment with a print on it, but something specifically Maltese in context.

“We felt that Malta was devoid of any type of indigenous brand that the average consumer could afford and wear as comfortably and as frequently as they want. People should buy it because it’s appealing, comfortable, affordable, different, easy-to-wear and relatable”.

Their cool summer line includes T-shirts, tank tops and a special edition crop top festooned with anything from flowers to zebras to the late President Agatha Barbara’s portrait. They target the young and young at heart. Furthermore, the team are already working on their winter collection which will offer hoodies and sweatpants.

Ebejer adds: “We felt there wasn’t anything out there young people could wear on a daily basis and identify with, and we wanted to give the Maltese a platform to the international urban clothing market, something to be proud of and associate themselves with.

“We are also focussed on the quality and durability of our items; each product has been tried and tested numerous times and we are very proud of the results.”

With its nod to contemporary Maltese culture and its playful tag lines – each Recured item comes in brown paper packaging and carries a quality-assured card with a one-of-a-kind quote on the back.

Recured will be sold online on the brand’s official website and at Riot boutique at The Plaza, Sliema. Check out their Facebook page Recured for all their latest updates.
