Alternattiva Demokratika said today that it was necessary that the law on the financing of political parties was not one which only established the administrative burdens which should be shouldered to ensure the financial accountability of political parties through an administrative transparency.

"Together with the administrative burdens we expect the assistance required to shoulder the burden. If this is not done it would signify that those who through the years were extra careful such that in the absence of a regulatory structure they were not dependent on political donations will be
punished."

The party also pointed out that contrary to public perceptions the Maltese state already finances political parties.

Since 1994 both the PN and the PL have each received €100,000 every year in order to finance their activity on a European and International level.

"AD - The Green Party considers that this financing of political parties by the state should be extended and should not be limited to the political parties in Parliament," Carmel Cacopardo Deputy Chairperson said.

A document on AD’s position on the Bill dealing with the Financing of Political Parties was handed to Justice Minister Owen Bonnici.
