I can’t remember a summer when I haven’t written to this newspaper about the main road through Victoria being blocked at the height of the tourist season.

What I can remember is a very recent announcement that there would be no roadworks this year in ‘tourist areas’ during midsummer.

Yet, last Monday morning, the main road was blocked at Savina Square. Two city-centre car parks were inaccessible. Closure of this major thoroughfare obviously results in traffic jams and affects several roads that feed into it.

The fact that no work seemed to be getting done does not change the situation.

Should we define the centre of Victoria as a ‘tourist area’, given that it is the capital (and only) city on Gozo and that the closed road is at the foot of the Citadel?

Should we define the Citadel as a ‘tourist area’?

Should we define roads closed for work as ‘roadworks’?

Should we define July as ‘the tourist season’?

The way things are going, before long we will have forgotten how to define ‘tourism’.
