Alex Ferguson’s replacement on the hot seat at Old Trafford, David Moyes, failed to please the Manchester United board following a series of erratic performances last season.

Moyes was sacked after just ten months in charge. He was temporarily replaced by Ryan Giggs.

At Newcastle, manager Alan Pardew was handed a seven-match ban for a head butt on Hull’s David Meyler. He was also fined £60,000 and warned as to his future conduct following the incident on March 1.

Season 2013-14 was the worst for Man. United for many a year.

Moyes stepped into a club in a transition phase as David Gill, Ferguson’s closest ally, also stepped down. He was replaced by Ed Woodward, a relative novice in the market.

Some of the worst moments the United fans endured last season included losing a League Cup semi-final on penalties at home.

Successive 3-0 home defeats in the Premier League against rivals Liverpool and Manchester City must have topped the bill.

Next season, United will have Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal as their new boss.

The way matters shaped up at St James’ Park in 2013-14 left the fans disappointed once again.

The loss of Yohan Cabaye in January was a severe setback for the Magpies as Pardew lost the ability to motivate his players. Indeed, the limit of his ambition seemed to be a mid-table position.

The home victory over Chelsea back in November was a classy performance which suggested Newcastle would be challenging for Europe again − but that was only a flash in the pan.

At first, the critics thought Moyes could save United’s season with a long run in the Champions League.

However, after they saw off Olympiakos in the last 16, United met their waterloo against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals − a home draw and a 1-3 loss in Germany.

In the FA Cup, United succumbed to Swansea 1-2 at Old Trafford and a penalty shoot-out defeat left them cursing their luck against Sunderland in the League Cup semi-final.

In the FA Cup, Newcastle lasted up to the fourth round, going down to Cardiff 1-2 at home.

In the other domestic cup competition, Newcastle went out in the same round – vs Manchester City 0-2 at St James’ Park.
