Maximilian Ciantar, who was at the centre of a public outcry when he ran over twin girls in Attard in 2011, is in police custody after allegedly having purposely driven into another car and attempted to run over a woman in Hamrun. The incident happened after a collision and a subsequent argument.

Mr Ciantar then drove away from the scene, sparking a police search. He was arrested after several hours and taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment for suspected drug use. While in hospital he had to be restrained after causing a commotion, informed sources said.

Mr Ciantar is under a court ban from driving until March 2015.

This morning's collision took place in Zerafa Street as Ciantar was driving a grey Renault Megane. He was involved in collision with a Toyota Aygo. A parked car was also damaged.

An argument ensued between Ciantar and the woman who had been driving the Aygo.

Mr Ciantar was released from prison after serving 16 months of his two-year jail term following the Attard incident and his 10-year driving ban was reduced to 16 months.

But one month later he was found driving in breach of that ban. He was granted bail but ran into more problems when he assaulted journalists covering his court case. His bail was revoked.

In February 2012, days after he was released from prison, he was fined €800 for heroin possession. He had previously been found guilty of heroin possession and fined €600.
