Eduard Shevardnadze, the former Soviet Foreign Minister who declared the Cold War buried in Maltese waters, has died after a long illness.

Shevardnadze had accompanied then Soviet President Mikhail Gorbacev in his 'sea sick' superpower summit meeting with US President George Bush in Marsaxlokk Bay in 1989.

After the break-up of the Soviet Union Shevardnadze served as president of Georgia.
