The Palestine Solidarity Network Malta is strongly denouncing the government’s support of Israel’s bid for a seat in the UN’s security council.

In a press conference this morning, a group of organisations came together next to City Gate and stood next to a Palestinian flag, condemning the government.

Andre Callus, of Moviment Graffiti, said it appeared the Maltese government was ready to support Isreal’s bid for a seat in the council and pointed out that this was a shift from its previous stance.

“It is alarming as historically Malta has always shown clearly shown support for the Palestinian cause,” he said.

Samuela Galea, speaking on behalf of the Palestine Solidarity Network, said the Palestinians were being subjected to brutal collective punishment at the hands of the Israel following the death of three Israeli settlers in unclear circumstances.

It was very disturbing that there was an international outcry over the death of the three settlers but there was a very weak political reacton to the atrocities perpetrated by Israel, she said.

AD secretary general Ralph Cassar said AD was against the setting up of Israeli settlements in occupied territory and against the harsh and cruel occupation of Palestine by Israel.

"The spiral of violence in the Middle East is an obvious consequence of the Israeli military occupation of Palestine."

The killing of three Israeli students and the consequent revenge through the killing of a Palestinian youth was a disgrace that but ut could never justify Israel's policy of collective punishment, he said.
