An overpass under construction in the Brazilian World Cup host city of Belo Horizonte has collapsed, crushing vehicles beneath, and killing at least one person, officials said.

It fell on top of one of the main thoroughfares that connects a World Cup stadium and the international airport.

Hours into the night -- crews worked to remove a passenger bus that had been partially crushed -- while another car was still trapped under the wreckage.

They also removed a body from the crash site.

Earlier in the day, a health department official said that two people had died, but later retracted that number to say one of the deaths was not confirmed.

Fire officials said 19 others were injured in the incident.

The overpass was originally intended to be part of a bus system that officials had promised would be ready in time for the games.

This isn't the first such fatal World Cup-related accident. Eight workers died in the process of building stadiums across the country.
