The vineyard landscape of Piedmont, Langhe-Roero and Monferrato have recently joined the French Bordeaux’s Saint Emilion region along with another 1,006 sites on Unesco’s elite group of cultural and natural sites with World Heritage status.

The vineyards in the northwest Italian Piedmont region produce two of Italy’s most famous DOCG red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Part of the regions’ submission was that vine pollen has been found in the area dating back to the 5th century BC, and was seen as one of the best vine-growing areas in Italy during the Roman Empire. Interestingly, other renowned regions like Champagne and Burgundy, are still awaiting confirmation of their World Heritage status.
