It seems to me that the Malta Tourism Authority is missing out on a great opportunity to boost tourism in the more rural areas of the island.

Instead of promoting the overpopulated tourist hotels which are mainly in the northern part of the island, why not put more emphasis on providing certified bed and breakfast establishments in the villages?

Having spoken to many tourists during the last 10 years of living here, it has become evident that, once arriving in their resort this is where they stay for the duration without venturing to the outlaying areas. Most will visit Valletta but what about say, the Three Cities? Not just for the Tuesday market, but for the culture that exists here.

There is a distinct advantage with bed and breakfast, such as living with local people who have first-hand knowledge of the island. I am sure that if this option were given, as is the norm in UK and Eire, there would be more people visiting who would go away with a good deal of fond memories and perhaps recommend the stay to others.
