A traffic policeman escorting President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca’s car was slightly injured when he was knocked to the ground in an accident yesterday morning.

The officer was riding his motorcycle in front of the car at 10.30am on December 13 Road in Marsa towards Valletta when he was knocked off by a white car, driven by a 19-year-old man from St Julian’s.

The President’s car is usually preceded by two police officers on motorcycles, known as outriders, and followed by security in a separate car.

An witness said the entourage pulled to the side before the President, looking very shaken, stepped out of the car. She spoke to the officer until an ambulance arrived on site to give medical assistance.

The officer walked into the ambulance and was taken to hospital where he was found to be suffering from slight injuries.

He was sent home soon after. No one else was injured.

A President’s Office spokeswoman said Ms Coleiro Preca was travelling to the Palace in Valletta from San Anton Palace in Attard.
