Veteran journalist Anton Cassar passed away early today, aged 90.

Mr Cassar worked at Il-Berqa before migrating to the General Workers' Union and founding l-orizzont in the 1960s.  He was prominent in his support of the Labour Party and the GWU, particularly during the discussion on Independence and in the dispute over church schools.

He was also very active in social circles in his home town, Marsa.

The Labour Party expressed its condolences and praised Mr Cassar for having worked for the Maltese not to remain anchored in the past.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday with a march by the Trinity Band Club from Balbi Street at 2 pm followed by Mass at Holy Trinity Parish Church at 3 pm.
