Most sports clubs are run on a voluntary basis and are non-profit making organisations.

During the last decade, both the government and the Malta Football Association have invested heavily in sports facilities for clubs hailing from all divisions. This commendable initiative should continue for the advancement of sports, in this case football, in Malta and Gozo.

The running of football clubs comes at a cost. Electricity and water consumption bills are a heavy burden for any committee administering a sport facility. One should also bear in mind the fact that sports associations are considered to be of a ‘commercial’ nature when it comes to electricity and water consumption tariffs.

The reduction of electricity and water tariffs for commercial entities as from 2015 will make a difference but, still, the burden will continue to be heavy on many organisations.

Considering that the savings gained from the reduction of tariffs will be re-invested in the work that non-voluntary associations carry out in our communities, would the government consider changing the status of such clubs from a ‘commercial’ to a ‘domestic’ nature?

I am sure that the majority of non-profit sports clubs will stand to benefit from such a decision and, consequently, sports clubs will have more cash flow, which they can then invest in the improvement of their facilities and endeavours.
