School’s almost out and parents will be scratching their heads while considering the various options available to their children over the summer holidays. They want something for their children that’s educational, creative, and, above all, fun.

This year the fun is returning to the new Secondary Boys School in Mosta. Workshops will take place on Monday and Wednesday mornings and are designed to perfectly merge arts and crafts, music and movement with developmental drama.

The concept behind The Fun Factory is simple enough: children will spend their first hour building and designing props and sets which will then be used in the last hour during the drama segment. If the students are working on a pirate-themed play, they will design and create their own eye-patches, hats and hooks during their creative part of the morning.

Movement and singing will be integrated to give the weekly production a professional touch. The idea of The Fun Factory was came about following extremely positive feedback from both teachers and parents of students attending the Helen O’Grady Academy.

“The power of developmental drama is huge,” explains principal Alan Montanaro. “And in an age where computer games and technology are eroding our children’s childhood, the importance of creativity and interactivity becomes an important consideration.”

The workshops will cover themed arts and crafts, ice-breakers and interactive exercises between the children and clarity of speech and interpretation of language. There will also be improvised drama, using the Helen O’Grady system, which children will create themselves within a pre-set framework. The plays themselves will be themed in such a way as to provoke positive and opinion-forming feedback from children on issues such as the environment, bullying, and the importance of social skills.
