I refer to the report titled ‘Council Must Pay €81,378’ (The Times, June 21). It is pertinent to note that the Department for Construction and Maintenance under the previous Administration carried out extensive works in most localities in Malta and Gozo and the department did not charge a cent.

In the case of Żejtun the department was out for the proverbial pound of flesh nearest to the heart. The funds mentioned concerned mainly projects carried out in 1995 and 2001. When the bills were presented we only asked why this was the treatment meted out in the case of Żejtun.

We leave the reply to the judgement of esteemed readers.
