Valletta captain Ryan Fenech has been named MFA footballer of the year for season 2013/14.

Fenech, 28, emerged on top in a poll involving the captains and coaches of Premier League clubs, Malta FA coaches and a pool of journalists.

The Malta midfielder was presented with the prestigious trophy by Norman Darmanin Demajo, the MFA president, during the 2014 MFA Awards Night, held this evening at the National Stadium.

Fenech was instrumental in Valletta's league and cup double triumph.
The other contenders for the award were Birkirkara trio Paul Fenech, last year's winner, Edward Herrera and Rowen Muscat and Valletta defender Jonathan Caruana.

Birkirkara, runners-up in the Premier League last season, also left their mark on this year's awards.

Paul Zammit won the coach of the year award, defender Zach Muscat the young player category while Brazilian striker Jhonnattann was voted best foreigner.

Herrera won the goal award for his amazing volley in Birkirkara's second-round win over Hibernians.

The president's award was given to Joe Cassar, the tournament director of the UEFA Under-17 Championship, held in Malta last month.
