The International Safety Training College (ISTC) recently welcomed a delegation of firefighters from Shell Iraq.
The delegation is in Malta for an intensive training programme, which focuses on the practical aspects of industrial firefighting and hands-on training.
Based at the Majnoon oil field in Iraq, the 12 firefighters were accompanied by Bernard Carter, a senior manager for Shell Iraq. Carter will be observing the training and filming the practical exercises at the training grounds, which utilise large heavy-duty props and real fire scenarios.
Andrew Gilravey, college director at ISTC Malta, said: “These are the first of many courses the firefighters will attend in Malta. The courses are part of a package that will raise the level of the firefighting teams of Majnoon, up to a standard that conforms with European, UK and NFPA (American) prerequisites.”
Shell’s delegates are enjoying five-star accommodation and are also chaperoned 24/7 by Arabic bi-lingual instructors. ISTC has also ensured that the welfare of the Iraqi delegates is being catered for as part of the ISTC package, which includes prayer rooms, halal food, cultural awareness training, Arabic instructors and guided tours. Cultural trips have also been included as part of the training package, to enable the delegates to get a feel for Malta’s rich historical heritage.
