England's defeat at the hands (or is it the feet) of Uruguayans has put us, England's supporters, in a most cruel dilemma.

If Italy loses or draws with Costa Rica, the English are definitively out of the tournament. If the Italians win then the English team would have a very slim chance of staying in Brazil for another round... Or perhaps two or three.

In these circumstances should the English fans support the Italians?

This is not an easy question to answer. It is a question of the utmost existential importance. It is a question that evokes the basic and most fundamental principles. It presents a most cruel dilemma. Should one opt for what is convenient or should one choose out of conviction? Deep reflection is required. Angst is present in all of us and is cruelly eating the very core of our existence.

There are two classes of English supporters.

The first class is made up of those who are against the Italians and then support the English team. Then there are those who support the English team and are against the Italians. Since I belong to the first grouping I prefer to see England on the first plane flying back home that having them stay thanks to the Italians.

The choice breaks my heart but breakage or no breakage one has to do - sob, sob - what one to do. It's hard being a man of principle, but it pays in the long run.

In the case of English supporters it only pays in the very, very long run.

Can anyone offer any consolation? (sob, sob.)
