Malta’s High Commissioner to Canada Marisa Micallef presented her credentials to Governor General of Canada David Johnston.
In a ceremony at Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s official residence in Ottawa. Mr Johnston noted the many similarities between Malta and Canada, including shared values, reinforced by the 50,000-strong Maltese-Canadian community.
Micallef passed on her greetings on behalf of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, saying relations were not simply confined to intergovernmental exchanges but went beyond as evident in the commercial, cultural and educational fields. She said she saw ample scope for further broadening these multifaceted relations and pledged to work towards that end during her term.
With regard to the Commonwealth, the High Commissioner made reference to the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which Malta will be hosting, and the work currently under way to make Malta’s second CHOGM a success.
She also paid tribute to the strategic partnership that exists between Canada and the EU, recalling that Malta was celebrating the 10th anniversary of membership this year.
Micallef is also Malta’s Ambassador to the US and is resident in Washington DC.
