Stella Maris College senior school, Gżira, is involved in a two-year Comenius project entitled Mare Nostrum together with schools from Portugal, Sicily and Crete.

The project aims to promote a better understand the Mediterranean region’s importance over the ages, to conduct research on its agriculture and climate and learn about the countries’ common heritage.

This year, the Maltese students worked on an ebook entitled Ecology of the Maltese Islands, which gives details on the Maltese climate, flora and fauna, whether terrestrial, aquatic or birds.

The project partners have identified a common endangered species and next year work will be looking for ways to protect it.

A group of teachers and students from the school recently visited Porto in Portugal to meet their counterparts, present the work done so far and plan work for the project’s second phase.
