Seven nursehound sharks have been released back into the sea at Ċirkewwa after having been saved as embryos from dead sharks on sale at the fish market.

Sharklab volunteers visit the fish market on a regular basis and look out for the pregnant sharks landed by fishermen. They collect the eggs by performing a caesarean section and then place them in a controlled environment at the National Aquarium, which will allow them to hatch in the right conditions.

The release of the seven nursehound sharks is the second success story for the project. Last February, three shark pups from the nursehound species were also released into the sea at Ċirkewwa.
