The Kayak for Charity 2014 team is preparing for the first Malta-Sicily-Malta round trip by kayak in aid of Inspire. Supported by Frank Salt Real Estate, this challenge will cover a 190-kilometre course, which will be paddled non-stop by the two-man team Andrea Scorcia and Ian Laferla on a double kayak.

As a warm-up, the athletes will be circumnavigating the Maltese archipelago: 110 km of non-stop paddling that will last around 18 hours.

Kayak for Charity was founded in 2008 by Albert Gambina and Dorian Vassallo, two kayak enthusiasts who decided to put their love for the relatively unfamiliar sport to good use, by getting more people to know about it and helping people in need. They have been paddling for worthy causes ever since and funds collected from previous challenges have exceeded €65,000.

Last year, Gambina and Vassallo followed St Paul’s trail from Malta to Rome, paddling 600 nautical miles in three weeks in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Inspire is a non-profit organisation providing therapeutic, education and leisure services for people with disability. Among many other initiatives, Inspire engages people with disability in sports activities and trains them for the Paralympics.

“We are very excited about supporting this event, which brings together sports and altruistic elements, and are committed to help organisers reach out to as many people as possible, with the hope of collecting the much-needed funds,” said Douglas Salt, director at Frank Salt Real Estate.

The public is invited to follow the group’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/KayakForCharity for more information or to make a donation.
